Authentication app

With the help of so-called authentication apps on your smartphone, it is possible to generate one-time passwords and use them as a second step. The authentication app must be installed on your personal device, for example on a private smartphone or on a smartphone that only you use for work. The authentication app periodically generates a one-time password that you can use to log in. The following authentication apps are examples of applications that are suitable for this way of authentication:

  • Google Authenticator (Google Play/App Store)
  • Microsoft Authenticator (Google Play/App Store)
  • Authy (Google Play/App Store)

When you have installed one of these applications on your smartphone, you can scan the displayed QR code using your camera. After scanning the code, your smartphone will ask you to open the authentication app. After opening the authentication app, your MRDM account will be linked immediately, after which the one-time passwords will be generated.

Text message

This factor is most suitable for users who do not have an authentication application available on the smartphone, but who can authenticate via a mobile phone. The one-time password will be sent to this factor via a text message. To configure SMS on first use, on the main MFA screen with the QR code, click on the ‘Try another method’ link first and then on ‘SMS’.

To set this factor, you must enter your mobile phone number once, after which it will be securely stored in your account. The mobile phone number can only be used for authentication via MFA. After setting your number you will receive a text message with a one-time password which you can enter immediately. If you have gone through this process, everything is set up correctly to use this authentication option in the future.

E-mail

Finally, you can also set up e-mail notifications. You can only use this option if you have already configured MFA for your account with an authentication app or via SMS. You can use the e-mail option, for example, when you temporarily do not have your smartphone or if it is out of range. When choosing this factor, a one-time password will be sent to your email account that was used to register your MRDM user account.

We recommend that you use the authentication apps or SMS notifications as much as possible.
